In Sandra’s dreams they are always in the same motion. The Buick is coming and Sandra is completely oblivious. Leslie sweeps Sandra out of her reverie with a push that carries them both past the giant sedan. The remainder is so much that Sandra is sitting on the sidewalk barely able to comprehend that there was a motion.

In the dream, Sandra hears the thud and even sees Leslie’s blood splatter. This is hyperbole, it actually took Sandra some time to notice that Leslie wasn’t moving but Leslie never left that high curb. It was a was shame because by all rights she should have been allowed to grow older than Sandra. Sandra promised her she would, before she understood what age was.

Sandra had to get up, there was yet another day of to live. That six year old was getting harder and harder to carry.
