Number The Children

45

That’s Melissa’s number . What that means is up to debate but Melissa knows that she’s lucky to come out so average. If it turns out that 1st is the ugliest, maybe just maybe, they won’t throw rocks at Melissa. She’ll probably get a job in the cafeteria unlike Terrence who was most assuredly 5th. If it turns out that the 100th is the smartest, Melissa will have a folksy charm and be popular enough to have plenty of friends but not enough to be a target.

5

That is Bill’s number and he liked it just fine, but when he looked over at Melissa he saw that she disapproved. He thought of how easy it would be to change to 15. That would be dishonest and it wouldn’t change the fact that he was a 5. Nothing can change your number, nothing.

11

That was Matthew’s number. Seeing as though it had nothing to do with Spiderman, Matthew did not care about it. He could see that Bill is smitten with Melissa again. Matthew thinks she is a rather average girl.

27

That is Terrence’s number. He is a seething ball of somehow uncaffeinated rage. 27 was the day in April, that Stan moved into his house. Stan is not Terrence’s father and never will be. He could only be a lie. Terrence continues planning how he will rescue his mother after Stan finally shows his true colors and attacks her,. It involved a plastic katana and tactics lifted from Doc Ock. He will have to consult Matthew later at recess.

1

That is Mickey’s number. He knew that he was 1st because he was best but not now he has proof. He will continue to lord his supremacy over the rest of the classroom…. especially Bill who was always easy pickings.

2

That is Ms. Keller’s number. Why the teacher’s edition was numbered she does not know. She does however have a sneaking suspicion that Mickey is better than her. Luckily, she has a car and a boyfriend to reassure her of her greatness.
